Scripture
“When the unclean spirit goes out of a man, it passes through waterless places seeking rest, and not finding any, it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came.’” - Luke 11:24
Observation
Jesus is defending his exorcism of evil spirits. A crowd has accused him of being in league with the devil, and he is explaining that if a spirit is not cleansed by the finger of God, it remains unclean and evil.
Application
We all have the evil spirit inside us. It may not be a demon, but it’s just as pervasive, just as aggressive. Church will cleanse it, prayer will cleanse it, Biblical study will cleanse it. However, if we are not vigilant it will return, finding its house “swept and in order,” and invite its friends in for tea and biscuits. Only the finger of God can truly cleanse, and the search for that connection can take a lifetime. Until then, be vigilant.
Prayer
Evil finds its way back into this house too often, Father, and shame is not long behind. I pray, Lord, that you extend your finger to me and help me keep that evil at bay.
